Frequently Asked Questions How do I transfer files to my web site? Files must be transferred to our webserver via File Transport Protocol (FTP). If you need FTP, telnet, mail or other Internet software, you can download a free version from Shareware.cnet.com or Download.cnet.com. Both are a great source for the latest Internet applications with ratings and reviews to help you decide which application is best suited for your needs. An FTP tutorial is also available for beginner users who may not be familiar with FTP. All FTP publishers like FrontPage are also supported. What is a virtual domain? A virtual domain is your Internet identity (http://www.yourdomain.com). With your virtual domain, you utilize our server's storage space, but you are still professionally represented via your own personal Internet web address domain name (www.yourdomain.com) and by your own personal email address domain name (you@yourdomain.com). Do you put banner ads on any of your accounts? No. We do not put any form of advertising on your site nor will we in the future. Will I be able to update my site 24 hours per day? You have unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure. Can I use my account for commercial purposes? Yes. You can use your account for commercial purposes. The World Wide Web has become the most efficient and cost-effective means of making information available to the users of the Internet community and we encourage our customers to utilize such an enormous medium. How long does it take to setup a new account? New accounts are set up in less than 24 hours from the time we receive your order and can be processed in as little as 30 minutes! Once an account is set up, an activation notice will be sent to you via email including your user-ID, password, and FTP hostname. You can begin uploading files to your new web site immediately by using your IP Address, but your web site will not be available on the web until your domain name propagates throughout the Internet (usually 48 hours). Can I subdivide my space and resell it? Yes. You can create subdirectories to offer your friends or clients space as long as its within our policy guidlines. By way of your user interface, you can even give them their own FTP account and directory. Can I point additional domains to any subdirectory? Yes. This can save your business a lot of money. We can show you how to point other domains to any directory or the same page. Are third level domains available (myname.domain.com)? Yes. Network Solutions (previously known as InterNIC) is an independent organization responsible for holding the registration and routing of Internet domain names. Without this service, it would be virtually impossible to maintain sanity on the Internet. Somebody must control which domain names are available and which are not. Their domain registration fee is $35 for the first year and $35/year thereafter. Other ICANN approved registrars are now available who will provide the same service for less. For example, our domain registration fee is $20 for the first year and $20/year thereafter. What happens if I go over my traffic allowance? Traffic is unlimited for most accounts. This is only an issue on 2 of our accounts which currently allow a maximum of 8 gigabytes per month. Less than 1% of our clients even come close to using this amount. In this case, an email warning will be sent to you before this actually occurs. You may purchase extra traffic or upgrade your account, if needed. How can I add more space to my site? You can purchase extra space for a very reasonable monthly fee or upgrade your account whichever is more feaseable. Contact our Sales Staff for information in this regard. Can I install my own cgi scripts? Yes. As long as the account type you are purchasing allows and includes CGI. We only monitor for poorly written scripts that may become resource hogs. Will server side includes work on your server (SSI)? Yes. SSI's will automatically parse on any page ending in .sht or .shtml, rather than the usual .htm or .html. Can you handle foreign country domain names? Yes. We currently house domains from over 100 countries. For foreign domain names, you can file the domain registration with your local NIC (or registrar) or we can register your domain for you. What type of java support do you offer? Please contact us in regard to java support and programming features that are available as java support and programming varies depending on the hosting plan type you choose. At present, we do not support java servlets. What is a Majordomo mailing list program? Majordomo is a full featured mailing list program that gives your visitors the ability to subscribe and unsubscribe their email address to your mailing list. This type of list is particularly designed as a method of interaction, and can be run as a closed or open, moderated or not list. As the list owner you can control all email distributed to the list and more. Every account includes the Majordomo mailing list program. In addition, every account includes a separate mailing list program managed via our mailing list control panel where you maintain the mailing list. Can I access my domain without the "www" in front? Yes. With our true virtual web hosting, anybody will be able to access your domain address with or without the "www" in front of the domain name. Example: [http://www.yourdomain.com] or [http://yourdomain.com] is acceptable, whichever you prefer - both will work. Do you offer dialup Internet access too? No. You must have Internet access to maintain your web site and retrieve email addressed to your site. You should remain with your current ISP or use any other ISP of your choice. Do you maintain backups of my data? Yes. We backup your home and WWW directories on a daily basis. You can also create backups via your Web Control Panel. You will most likely maintain backups on your pc as well. Do you handle the domain registration? Yes. If you send us payment in advance for domain registration, we will register it for you or we will help you through the registration process. We will contact the registrar once your account is activated to request either a new domain name registration or a domain name modification (transferring an existing domain to our servers). Can I transfer an existing domain to your servers? Yes. Just make sure to specify that you are requesting a transfer and NOT a new domain. You should keep the service with your current provider while waiting for the registrar to complete the transfer process. We will provide you with a temporary IP address so you can mirror the site on our server. All email and web pages will still be accessed from your current site. When the registrar announces the completion of the transfer, there is a 48-72 hour propagation period where visitors could go to either site. At the end of the 72 hours, you should contact your previous host to have them delete the old domain from their records and update their DNS records. If you use this same provider for your Internet access, you may not be able to access your domain site until they update their DNS. When we file a modification, one of the current listed contacts must ok-authorize the move. Usually the registrar will send you an email that you must ok-authorize to have the redirection of your domain completed. If the contact email on your domain has changed from the time you originally registered it, you will need to fax an authorization to complete the process using a tracking number - we will help you through this process upon request. How long does it take before my domain is active? After the registrar announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred), it usually takes 48-72 hours before it is active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site's location. What email features are included and offered? Every account includes at least five POP3 email accounts, each including email forwarding, catch-all and an autoresponder. Unlimited POP3 accounts are available with no limitations.
